Merry Christmas Unto us a child is born!

Posted on December 22, 2011

In those days Caesar Augustus declared that everyone throughout the empire should be enrolled in the tax lists. This first enrollment occurred when Quirinius governed Syria. Everyone went to their own cities to be enrolled. Since Joseph belonged to David’s house and family line, he went up from the city of Nazareth in Galilee to David’s city, called Bethlehem, in Judea. He went to be enrolled together with Mary, who was promised to him in marriage and who was pregnant. While they were there, the time came for Mary to have her baby. She gave birth to her firstborn child, a son, wrapped him snugly, and laid him in a manger, because there was no place for them in the guestroom.

Nearby shepherds were living in the fields, guarding their sheep at night. The Lord’s angel stood before them, the Lord’s glory shone around them, and they were terrified.

The angel said, “Don’t be afraid! Look! I bring good news to you–wonderful, joyous news for all people. Your savior is born today in David’s city. He is Christ the Lord. This is a sign for you: you will find a newborn baby wrapped snugly and lying in a manger.” Suddenly a great assembly of the heavenly forces was with the angel praising God. They said, “Glory to God in heaven, and on earth peace among those whom he favors.”

When the angels returned to heaven, the shepherds said to each other, “Let’s go right now to Bethlehem and see what’s happened. Let’s confirm what the Lord has revealed to us.” They went quickly and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby lying in the manger. When they saw this, they reported what they had been told about this child. Everyone who heard it was amazed at what the shepherds told them. Mary committed these things to memory and considered them carefully. The shepherds returned home, glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and seen. Everything happened just as they had been told.

Luke 2

The Birth of Jesus
1 In those days Caesar Augustus issued a decree that a census should be taken of the entire Roman world. 2 (This was the first census that took place while[a] Quirinius was governor of Syria.) 3 And everyone went to their own town to register.
4 So Joseph also went up from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to Bethlehem the town of David, because he belonged to the house and line of David. 5 He went there to register with Mary, who was pledged to be married to him and was expecting a child. 6 While they were there, the time came for the baby to be born, 7 and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no guest room available for them.

8 And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. 9 An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. 10 But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. 11 Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord. 12 This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.”

13 Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying,

14 “Glory to God in the highest heaven,
and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests.”

15 When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, “Let’s go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about.”

16 So they hurried off and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby, who was lying in the manger. 17 When they had seen him, they spread the word concerning what had been told them about this child, 18 and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds said to them. 19 But Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart. 20 The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things they had heard and seen, which were just as they had been told

Here is a excerpt from one of Pastor Andy Stanly’s sermon series on marriage that might be helpful to you!

What Do You Believe Your Spouse Owes You?

The answer to this question that is given only applies to Christians. Pastor Stanley only has a Christian answer for that question. The Bible explains how to keep the expectation box empty.

  • The answer: Your spouse owes you nothing.
  • A Christian marriage is not one in which you try to use the Bible to control the other’s behavior.

Paul says in Ephesians

Submit to one another out of reverence to Christ.” Ephesians 5:21

  • Submit means you are going to make your spouse’s wishes, desires, and dreams a priority over your own.
  • It is not submit out of reverence for one another but out of reverence for Christ.
  • This verse is saying that God wants you to take all of the passion and gratitude you have for Him and all that He has done for you and channel it to your spouse.
  • God does not want you to submit because your spouse has earned it or deserves it but because He put you first.

Wives, submit to your husbands as to the Lord.” Ephesians 5:22

  • This is not saying that wives should submit because husbands are great or because they deserve it.
  • You are to submit to your husband because God asks you too.

Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her.” Ephesians 5:25

  • God wants you to be willing to lay down your life for her just as He laid down His life for you.
  • It means that you have to learn how to communicate with your wife so that she understands that you are willing to lay down your life for her.
  • It is the best demonstration of gratitude you could ever show to God.
  • You are God’s number one tool in demonstrating His love for your spouse. That is a huge responsibility.

Changing Everything

When two people choose to empty out the expectation box and submit to one another the dynamics of the relationship change completely.

  • You cannot focus on your spouse’s wishes and desires if you have already loaded them down with expectations.
  • You have to first focus on the one who first said “You don’t owe me anything” – God. Then you can focus on understanding that your spouse does not owe you anything.
  • You will never experience unconditional love if you cannot express it or even recognize it.
  • You will never experience unconditional love until you stop trying to manage expectations.

There are no guarantees and this is not a formula. If you are afraid to empty the box you will not have the potential to experience or to give unconditional love. However, this answer is your only hope for God to be involved and for you to receive the unconditional love that you desperately need.
