Marriage on cruise control

Marriage on Cruise Control

Cruise Control is great in a vehicle on long trips. I like to set it on the interstate and just drive. I don’t use it on short trips like to the grocery store or the gas station. Marriage is not meant to be a short trip so we start to put it on cruise control. Cruise Control is great for a long drive but terrible for your marriage! Marriage is for the long haul. So many marriages get stuck in cruise control though. What can you do today for your spouse to shake things up a bit? Maybe a foot rub? A massage? Kind words? Bring him a cup of coffee? Buy her some flowers for no reason? It is so easy for marriage to get complacent. Don’t let it happen to you! The good thing is your not stuck. You can turn things around today. God’s word tells us that the enemy wants to steal, kill, and destroy you. Maybe he can’t get your to cheat on your spouse so he tries to ruin your marriage through cruise control. You feel stuck and things never seem to change. Try something today if you feel stuck. Tonight before you go to bed, dust off your Bible and just read it together. Pray together! I challenge you to do this. Even if you think it won’t help. I am sure it will! Take the cruise control off today! Read God’s word, Pray together and for each other, and do something kind for your spouse! You will see immediate results.

In marriage, it’s the little things that count! Practice Kindness

Random Acts of Kindness

Try practicing “rak” random acts of kindness. Marriage is about the big things but also the little things. Try giving your spouse a massage, put a note in their brief case or lunch. Get creative. Kindness goes a long way in any relationship. Most of us are only used to doing random acts of kindness on special occasions like birthdays or anniversaries. It would be a great thing in our marriages if we could train ourselves to just do one thing a day. It doesn’t have to be a big act. Just something small to let your spouse know that you appreciate them. It will come full circle I promise. You can start by just saying kind words. Build your spouse up! Especially in public. Mother Teresa once said “Kind words can be short and easy to speak but their echoes are truly endless.”

The same advice I give my kids I give to myself and all of us married couples. “Be Nice, Be kind”! It really does go a long way.

Real connection – Pastor Robert

We live in a wonderful time. We as humans have accomplished so much with technology. Tech is great! However it is also bad. Today’s technology is supposed to bring us closer together. But what it has really done is drive a wedge between us. A great wedge. A chasm. Social media, texting, etc. has caused major problems in our society. Young people don’t look each other in the eyes anymore. They have traded real dates at coffee shops with texting each other all night. We have traded real friendship with fake friends on line. Men need friends. Women need friends. Husbands and Wives need each other. They need real communication. Real date nights. Real community. Read_more

God-Like Thinking not Positive Thinking – By Pastor Robert Bullock

Godly living

God-Like Thinking Not Positive Thinking

We hear it all the time. “Think positive”! There is a multi million dollar industry in the book world all about positive thinking. I get it. People are depressed. People get lonely. People get sad. Here’s the thing though. Without God we cannot change our thinking. Our thinking is all flawed because of sin. Sin has distorted everything about us. Especially our thinking. We cannot rely on positive thinking to change things. The Bible talks a lot about this. It is the doctrine of regeneration. The Bible is clear that there is a lot wrong with our brains, our spirit, and our soul. We are broken because of sin. Completely lost without Jesus. Yes I said Jesus that time instead of God. We cannot get to God without Jesus. It is impossible. Regeneration and Sanctification happen in the believers life when we replace our flawed thinking with God-thinking. Jesus had a lot to say about sanctification in John 17. In verse 16 the Lord says, “They are not of the world, even as I am not of it,” and this is before His request: “Sanctify them by the truth; your word is truth” (verse 17). WE are becoming something. Not by our own strength but by God’s power inside us. If you are born again, (which is the only way to enter the kingdom of God according to Jesus) you began a wonderful journey of sanctification. Part of that is your work and part of that is God’s work. The Holy Spirit changes the way we think. He replaces the old way of thinking with His kind of thinking. It does not happen overnight however. It is a process. How do we help the process? By staying close to Him. By reading His word. By praying regularly. By having quiet time with Him. That is our part. God does the rest. He literally replaces bad, flawed, garbage, and sinful thinking with His.

The Apostle Paul tells us “Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 3:13-14)

We want to put all that negative sinful thinking behind us and move forward with God like thinking. Try it today. Read the word of God. Pray to the creator of the Universe through Jesus. You will see what I’m talking about.

Keep Your Head! Truth is truth and lies are lies.

marriage on the beach

The world seems to be getting a little worse all the time it seems. But it’s really not. Every sinful thing that is in the world has been a sin since the fall of man in Genesis. The problem comes when believers lose their head. Become afraid or overwhelmed by it all. Scary feelings are  amplified by having world news right at our fingertips 24/7. Social media can be a good thing but also a bad thing for us.
God never intended for His children to live in fear. No matter what’s going on around us He is still in control. Yes Satan is real and he is on the earth but God is completely in control. He is preparing His church for greater things. His Kingdom. If you are part of His church you have nothing to fear.  Their are a great many churches in our culture that are teaching lies today. As newly weds, I want to encourage you to find a church that does not compromise God’s truth. Oprah said something that is very disturbing at the golden globes awards. She said that “we should tell our truth”. What is bad about that? There is only one truth. There is either truth or a lie. Opinions don’t count. Where do we find absolute truth? Only in God’s word! If a church is not preaching the truth of God’s word then leave! These days you can find a church that will say that your sins are ok. But that is not what Jesus said. He told the woman caught in adultery to “go and sin no more”. Not, “go sin a little less” but no more! That is repentance. Turning away from the things that God detest. That is truth. God wants to change us. The Bible is not meant for our knowledge but it is meant to change us! Is it changing you?
The church should not lose it’s head in times of tribulations. The church should not be fearful in perilous times. We should look to the sky. Be ready. Jesus will come back for His church. Maybe your reading this and you are not a Christ follower. I want to encourage you today to start reading God’s word. Investigate it for yourself. You will find that it is truth.
When I was a kid, I idolized Michael Jordan. I read every book about him. I watch all his videos. Bought all the merchandise. I thought I was his biggest fan. I knew all his stats. I knew about his childhood. I knew where he went to college. I knew about his brothers and his parents. However, if I would have see him on the street and walked up to him, and tried to act like I knew him, what do you think would have happened? He would have said something like “security get this fool away from me”. I would say but Mike, I know everything about you! He would say something like “I don’t know you! Get away from me”.

The Bible says that many on the last day will say “Lord, Lord”. ” I know everything about you. I went to church. I even did good deeds. It is the scariest passage in the Bible because these people thought they knew Jesus. He looks at them and says “depart from me you evil doers, I never knew you”

Their are churches that are telling “their truth”. Which isn’t truth at all. Remember there is only truth and lies. Don’t lose your head. Jesus is truth. The world will be bad. Their will be false teachers. Actually the less discernment the church has, the more false teachers we will have. It’s almost like, we get what we deserve. But for those of you that are truly part of His church. Keep your head.

Matthew 7:21-23New King James Version (NKJV)

I Never Knew You

21 “Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in heaven. 22 Many will say to Me in that day, ‘Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in Your name, cast out demons in Your name, and done many wonders in Your name?’ 23 And then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness!’

2 Timothy 4:3-5New International Version (NIV)

For the time will come when people will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear. They will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths. But you, keep your head in all situations, endure hardship, do the work of an evangelist, discharge all the duties of your ministry.

Genesis 2:22-24New International Version (NIV)

22 Then the Lord God made a woman from the riba] he had taken out of the man, and he brought her to the man.

23 The man said,

“This is now bone of my bones
    and flesh of my flesh;
she shall be called ‘woman,’
for she was taken out of man.”

24 That is why a man leaves his father and mother and is united to his wife, and they become one flesh.

Don’t give up! The Bible is full of stories about God rescuing His people but also full of times where He says “endure it”

Gulf Shores Beach Wedding Packages

1 Thessalonians 1:2-3

We always thank God for all of you and continually mention you in our prayers. We remember before our God and Father your work produced by faith, your labor prompted by love, and your endurance inspired by hope in our Lord Jesus Christ.

Paul gives thanks to God that faith has produced work and love has produced labor and hope has produced endurance.

How Do You Keep On Going? When things are really hard.

What  is the relationship between endurance and hope. Our text is verse 3 and in particular the phrase, “endurance of hope.” I take this to mean that hope produces endurance, or that endurance is the fruit of hope.

The question I want to ask is this: How do you keep on going on a road of obedience to Christ?

Now lets look at a great old testament example of someone that wanted to give up.

Jeremiah is a prophet…

he declares messages in t he name of God..

Israel has turned away from God..

Jeremiah’s message was a turn or burn message..

“get saved or microwaved”

nobody liked his message..

Then Jeremiah prays to God…

he says something like this: Are you there God? Do you see what is going on in our Nation? Why do the wicked prosper? Why do the faithful struggle?

God’s response to Jeremiah’s complaint? Endure it.

jeremiah 12New International Version (NIV)

Jeremiah’s Complaint

You are always righteous, Lord,

when I bring a case before you.

Yet I would speak with you about your justice:

Why does the way of the wicked prosper?

Why do all the faithless live at ease?

You have planted them, and they have taken root;

    they grow and bear fruit.

You are always on their lips

    but far from their hearts.

Yet you know me, Lord;

you see me and test my thoughts about you.

Drag them off like sheep to be butchered!

Set them apart for the day of slaughter!

How long will the land lie parched

and the grass in every field be withered?

Because those who live in it are wicked,

the animals and birds have perished.

Moreover, the people are saying,

“He will not see what happens to us.”

Jeremiah 12:5New International Version (NIV)

God’s Answer

“If you have raced with men on foot

and they have worn you out,

how can you compete with horses?

If you stumble[a] in safe country,

how will you manage in the thickets by[b] the Jordan?

Basically I get this : Jeremiah i don’t need you to understand, I need you to endure.

He doesn’t say I’m gonna make it better.

He basically says “its gonna get a lot worse.

He saying there is more for you to do!

Jeremiah is ready to quit.. God is saying there is more to do…

today you may see all the evil around us and be tempted to give up….

I believe that God would tell you “there is more for you to do…

God is with you and has strength for you to endure..

we must have endurance.

We celebrate people that overcome and have endurance though hardship

one of my favorite stories..

I love the story of Lous Zamperini: WWII

no food and minimal supplies, the men survived for 47 days and drifted 2,000 miles before being rescued/captured by the Japanese.

then spent two years in as a POW and tortured..

We love stories like these… we celebrate stories like this … but we do not want to live it out..

How do we endure in a world that seems to be so bad and evil seems to be getting worse..

in 2 Timothy 4

Paul is at the end of his life. This is the one of the last things he ever wrote.

He is in Prison and about to be executed.

Lessons that we can learn from Paul about endurance …

2 Timothy 4New International Version (NIV)

In the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who will judge the living and the dead, and in view of his appearing and his kingdom, I give you this charge: Preach the word; be prepared in season and out of season; correct, rebuke and encourage—with great patience and careful instruction.

some of us might think: thank God i’m not a preacher…

the word preach means to proclaim…

so this is for all of us! Proclaim the Word!

We are all ministers..

it is our job to make him known..

at school, at work.. …in our homes…

are we?

make him known…Preach the word.

“be prepared”

have you ever been unprepared?

I was unprepared to be a parent…

They send you home from the hospital with a living human baby with no instruction manual..

you just have figure it out..

it is not fun to be unprepared

Paul writes to Timothy to be prepared, because he has gone through about everything..

He has faced it.

They tried so hard to kill him, shut him up, or to keep him in jail.

He says you have to be prepared for anything…

God is preparing you in this life for what He has for you…on this earth and in His Kingdom

David was a shepard in the pasture and God took what David learned in the pasture and used it in the palace.

God used Peter who was a FisherMan and turned him into a a fisher of men..

God can use every experience that you have for His glory..

God doesn’t waste what your going through right now. ..

He is preparing you..

My point is that maybe the things you are having to endure now are preparing you for where God will have you tomorrow.

He’s also pruning you!

As Christians we have to endure times of pruning..

Cutting away of things in our life.

pruning is to increase production of fruit.

but Pruning hurts.

Pruning involves cutting off branches of your life that don’t produce fruit.

It’s part of the sanctification process.

John 15:2New International Version (NIV)

He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit, while every branch that does bear fruit he prunes[a] so that it will be even more fruitful.

whatever your going through.. it’s for your good,,, IF you love God.

It is a promise..

Romans 8:28

28 And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who[a] have been called according to his purpose.

I believe Every season in your life is preparation for the next!

2 Timothy 4:3-4

For the time will come when people will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear. They will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths.

that is for them! This is people that don’t know Jesus.

the world is gonna be bad… people are not gonna know what bathroom to use anymore.. men will ‘marry” men.,, women will get married women,, and some of the churches are gonna be ok with it..

SIDENOTE: Gay marriage does not really exist. We can not define what God designed. Marriage is a covenant relationship that was invented by God. So although two men or two women say the are “married” they really are not.

they will turn their ears away from the truth! …

we’ve seen this everywhere in our culture…

verse 5 is for us…

But you, keep your head (don’t worry, or be afraid) in all situations, endure hardship, do the work of an evangelist, discharge all the duties of your ministry.

What is God saying to His church?

yes the world is sinful, our culture is ungodly

He says.. endure, keep your head.

Endure it!

maybe we’ve been trying to escape what God wants us to endure.

The world is falling apart..  Because of sin. It will continue to do so.

I believe The reason God wants you to endure and walk through it is because He is preparing you for the next season in your life … or for His kingdom.

Paul tells Timothy: “Gods not coming to the rescue every time you have a problem…

you are gonna have to learn to ENDURE

man up …woman up.. put on your big boy pants and deal with it

God is telling us: He is not coming to the rescue every time we have a problem…..

I believe He wants us to endure!

Lastly, Remember how a marathon works

2 Timothy 4:6

For I am already being poured out like a drink offering, and the time for my departure is near. I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day—and not only to me, but also to all who have longed for his appearing.

Historians say that Paul was boiled to death in a pot of hot oil and then beheaded… Roman Emperor Nero..

This is how he finished his the race…

Life is not a Sprint,to the finish line .. its a Marathon…

People that run marathons know its a long way to the finish line.

a marathon is 26 miles

you don’t just show up at a marathon and run it..

remember Forrest Gump: “for not particular reason I just started running”

its not the way it works

you have to train for a marathon…

training builds endurance…

endurance requires: Resistance…

Resistance is your friend..

I haven’t been to the gym too many times and seen someone pushing up an empty bar..

The weight, the resistance is what builds you..

whatever weight your carrying today I want you to look at in a new way…

That resistance in your life…,,, is making you stronger not weaker!

everyday that we endure it … we are getting stronger.

Paul had a thorn in the flesh… we don’t know what it was…

many scholars believe it was a problem with His eyes

There are several times in the new testament that suggest that Paul had poor eyesight..

whatever it was..

he prayed 3 times.. for God to take it away…

God answers: My Grace is Sufficient For You..

He tells Paul Endure it buddy. Remember you big boy pants!

Paul tells Timothy that “you gotta have some fight in you..”

I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race

We live in a culture that if the going gets tough we go home..

Probably none of us will ever have to endure the things that Paul did.. but lets look at a few..

Acts 14:19English Standard Version (ESV)

Paul Stoned at Lystra

19 But Jews came from Antioch and Iconium, and having persuaded the crowds, they stoned Paul and dragged him out of the city, supposing that he was dead.

1 Corinthians 4:12

12 We work hard with our own hands. When we are cursed, we bless; when we are persecuted, we endure it;

2 Corinthians 11:25English Standard Version (ESV)

25 Three times I was beaten with rods. Once I was stoned. Three times I was shipwrecked; a night and a day I was adrift at sea;

Paul is saying to Timothy .. and us…its not okay.. to quit..

I read an article about someone who was being interviewed after a marathon…

the reporter asked them .. “what kept you going”

He said ..”remember why you started”

Remenber why you started the race to begin with..

Remember why you got married.

Remember why you started your career

Remember why you started a family

Remember why you started following Jesus.

finish the race… God is with you…

The Importance Of Newly Weds Joining a Church

We know that you are busy. You have a career, possibly children, hobbies, and other things that fill up your time. I do too. I believe it is so important for newly weds to start their marriage off right by getting involved in a local church. Not that the church saves you, only faith in Jesus can do that, but I want you to see why church is so vitally important to the Christian Newly Wed.

One of the most common statements that I’ve seen is “Christians divorce at the same rate as non-Christians,” undoubtedly giving the world another opportunity to shout “Hypocrite!” This is controversial statement that is surely going to attract eyes and pageviews, but how accurate is it? Some even say that religious conservatives divorce more than the rest of society.

We’ve all heard that you have a 50% chance of getting divorced, because, you know, 1 in 2 marriages end in divorce. Research actually shows that couples who are active in their faith are much less likely to divorce. Catholic couples were 31% less likely to divorce; Protestant couples 35% less likely; and Jewish couples 97% less likely, which in itself is quite impressive, I must say. You can look for yourselves in Christians Are Hate-Filled Hypocrites… and Other Lies You’ve Been Told

The Church is the most powerful institution ever created because it was created by God. Jesus one day will come back for His church. Not everyone that goes to church, but those that are truly His. Jesus says that you must be born again to enter into the Kingdom of Heaven. But once we are truly “His”, the Bible state that we should not cease assembling ourselves together.-

Hebrews 10:25 Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching.

The church is not assembling of people that are exactly alike either. If it is you may be at the wrong church! The church is about community not a click or a club.  Anyone can form a club, but it takes grace, shared vision, and hard work to form a community. The Church was the first institution in history to bring together on equal footing Jews and Gentiles (non-Jews), Men and women, slaves and free. The apostle Paul said that this is a “mystery that has been kept hidden in God” By forming a community and not a club out of different people, Paul said we have the opportunity to capture the attention of the world.

Ephesians 3:9-10 And to make all men see what is the fellowship of the mystery, which from the beginning of the world hath been hid in God, who created all things by Jesus Christ:

10 To the intent that now unto the principalities and powers in heavenly places might be known by the church the manifold wisdom of God,

Does the church fail sometimes? Yes. But the Church is the one place that brings together different generations, babies, children, adults, races, and personalities. All for the sake of community. All for one common reason. Jesus. We find common ground in Jesus. If you want the community experience God is offering to us, we have a reason to seek out a congregation of people that are “not like us”. That’s what community is. We are all different. We all have different world views but love knits us together in community not clubs. Find a church that you and your family can be part of the community that is the church.

Ephesians 3:6

That the Gentiles should be fellowheirs, , and partakers of his promise in Christ by the gospel:

Marriage Is Rewarding, Fun, and a lot of Work. Communication is key to a lasting Marriage.

My wife and I were wed on June 5, 1999. 18 years ago. All of our married friends are now divorced. It is a sad epidemic. Marriage is supposed to be “death till we part”. Our culture has turned marriage into a contract to be broken. We learn from God’s word that marriage is a covenant. God’s word is the true picture of marriage. So below I have included scriptures about marriage.
I once heard a Pastor stand before his congregation and tell them that He and his wife have never had an argument. Either he was lying or they have a very unhealthy relationship. I’m hoping that he was lying for the sake of his marriage. Communication is key to a healthy marriage. We can not bottle our feelings inside. Talk it out! Work it out! We can’t work it out if we don’t talk. It’s ok to disagree. If husbands loved their wives like Christ loves His church think of how many marriages would be healed. Jesus sacrificed himself for the church! When we look at marriage as a covenant relationship rather than a contract between two parties that can be broken, we begin to see that marriage is about sacrifice. Jesus gave His life for the church. That is what true love looks like.

Genesis 1:27-28: “So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them. And God blessed them. And God said to them, ‘Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over every living thing that moves on the earth.’ “

Malachi 2:14-15: “But you say, ‘Why does he not?’ Because the LORD was witness between you and the wife of your youth, to whom you have been faithless, though she is your companion and your wife by covenant.”

Isaiah 54:5: “For your Maker is your husband, the LORD of hosts is his name; and the Holy One of Israel is your Redeemer, the God of the whole earth he is called.”

Song of Solomon 8:6-7: “Set me as a seal upon your heart, as a seal upon your arm, for love is strong as death, jealousy is fierce as the grave. Its flashes are flashes of fire, the very flame of the LORD. Many waters cannot quench love, neither can floods drown it. If a man offered for love all the wealth of his house, he would be utterly despised.”

Ephesians 4:2-3: “With all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love, eager to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.”

Colossians 3:14: “And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity.”

Ecclesiastes 4:9: “Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labor: If either of them falls down, one can help the other up. But pity anyone who falls and has no one to help them up. Also, if two lie down together, they will keep warm. But how can one keep warm alone?”

Ephesians 5:25: “For husbands, this means love your wives, just as Christ loved the church. He gave up his life for her.”

Genesis 2:24: “Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.”

Ecclesiastes 4:12: “Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A cord of three strands is not quickly broken.”

Mark 10:9: “Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate.”

Ephesians 5:25-33: “Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her, that he might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word, so that he might present the church to himself in splendor, without spot or wrinkle or any such thing, that she might be holy and without blemish. In the same way husbands should love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. For no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as Christ does the church, …”
